Espanyol celebrate
VALENCIA, Spain – Luis Garcia scored in the 81st minute as Espanyol rallied for a 2-1 win at Valencia in Spanish league action on Saturday.
Garcia beat the offside trap down the right flank before sliding a shot past goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand with his right foot to clinch Espanyol’s first win over Valencia in over six years.
Albert Riera chested Valmiro Lopez’s cross from the right before volleying in a bouncer with his left foot for Espanyol’s first in the 20th.
Ruben Baraja opened for Valencia in the fifth, the midfielder getting over two defenders to meet David Villa’s cross with his head.
Real Madrid leads the standings with 16 points, one point better than Villarreal and Valencia. FC Barcelona has 14.
Espanyol improved to 13 points with its third straight victory.
On Sunday, Argentine prodigies Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero take scoring streaks into Barcelona’s game with Atletico Madrid. The two are tied atop the league lead for goals scored, with five each.
Aguero scored six goals in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada in July, and was named tournament MVP, in leading Argentina to its second straight U-20 title.
Also Sunday, Madrid plays Recreativo Huelva, while Villarreal will look to keep pace when it plays Osasuna.
The rest of the seventh-round games are Zaragoza versus Levante; Athletic Bilbao versus Almeria; Murcia versus Real Betis; Mallorca versus Getafe; Racing Santander versus Valladolid; and, Sevilla versus Deportivo La Coruna.
