Joel Casamayor

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Antonio Margarito, Joel Casamayor and rising prospect Victor Ortiz will get their next fights on the undercard of Miguel Cotto’s bout with Sugar Shane Mosley on Nov. 10.

Promoters Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya formally announced their lineup of supporting fights Saturday, filling the Madison Square Garden card with popular boxers for the HBO pay-per-view broadcast.

"Instead of doing what so many promoters - including ourselves - have done in the past and put on a junk undercard, we decided we would pack this card so we could show how great the sport is, and how many great fighters there are in the sport," Arum said.

Margarito (34-5, 24 KOs), who lost his WBO welterweight title belt to Paul Williams in July, will fight NABF champ Golden Johnson, who upset Oscar Diaz last November. Margarito already is campaigning to fight the winner of Cotto’s meeting with Mosley for the WBA welterweight title.

Casamayor (34-3-1, 21 KOs), the former Cuban Olympian who won the WBC lightweight title last year by beating the late Diego Corrales, will get his first action in 13 months when he fights former titleholder Jose Armando Santa Cruz.

Ortiz (19-1-1, 14 KOs), Arum’s prize junior welterweight prospect, will fight former champion Carlos Maussa, who was knocked out by Ricky Hatton in November 2005.

Trafford eased into the Second Round of The FA Vase with a comfortable 2-0 win over Oldham Town at White Bank Road on Saturday.

Goals from Scott Barlow and Max Kisseh proved enough to see off a spirited Oldham Town side, who played their part in an entertaining First Round encounter.

Despite booking their place in the next stage of the competition, Trafford boss Ged Kielty remained disappointed by his side’s lacklustre performance. He said: “I thought we would get a better performance than this. We were too lethargic despite having trained well all week.

“We were too slow against a strong and organised side. We just did enough to get through.”

Trafford are enjoying an excellent start to the season and currently occupy second place in the Vodkat League Division One, but Kielty admits his side enjoy their cup adventures.

“It is good to focus on The Vase every few weeks,” he added.

“We want to get as far as we can and make a few quid for the club.”

After a goalless first-half, the game sprung to life shortly after the hour mark thanks to an inspired substitution.

Barlow, who had spent most of the afternoon on the bench, made an instant impact on the tie by lifting a sublime chip over visiting goalkeeper Gareth McWatt to give the home side the lead.

Shortly after, Kisseh’s towering header made the game safe, after he converted Sam Halligan’s searching delivery.

Elsewhere in the First Round of The FA Vase, Hamworthy United ran riot at home to Newton Abbot, as an 8-1 victory booked their place in the Second Round in comprehensive style.

Shrivenham FC edged a thriller at The Triangle, as the visitors snatched a 3-2 victory over hosts Henley Town to advance to the Second Round.

Kirkham and Wesham sealed their place in the next round with a convincing 5-0 win over Parkgate at Kellamergh Park.

Budleigh Salterton could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Plymouth Parkway, the visitors battled hard and now look forward to next week’s replay.

Dougherty: Took his chances

The Old Lady’s never been good to me, I have always struggled on it, but I felt like I built a bit of confidence on it today

Nick Dougherty
Quotes of the week

Collated scores

England’s Nick Dougherty fired a second successive 66 to move into a three-shot lead at the Dunhill Links Championship.

Dougherty’s Friday 66 was at Carnoustie and he matched that around St Andrews on Saturday, to go clear of Australia’s Peter O’Malley.

Dougherty - who did not drop a shot all day - had a run of four birdies in five holes from the fourth and picked up further shots at the 11th and 17th.

The 25-year-old from Liverpool is aiming to land a second European Tour title after winning the Caltex Masters in 2005.

Chances

Dougherty told Sky Sports: “To be honest I just took my chances where I had them. I have putted really well this week. That’s what has made the difference and why I have made so many birdies.”

All the players who make the third-round cut will play at St Andrews on Sunday and Dougherty added:”I think it’s a good thing I will be playing St Andrews two days in a row.

“The Old Lady’s never been good to me, I have always struggled on it, but I felt like I built a bit of confidence on it today.

“I couldn’t have shot much of a worse score than that. It is nice to be able to go and play the same course tomorrow having played it today. I think I am in a good position and it will be good fun. I am very, very satisfied with a 66 round this course today.

Third round leaders

GB and Ire unless stated

-17 N Dougherty

-14 P O’Malley (Aus)

-13 P Lawrie

-13 J Rose

-13 S Webster

-13 P Harrington

“I am pleased with the way I played the golf course and I am looking forward to playing well again tomorrow.”

O’Malley, who started the day tied for the lead with Dougherty and South African Hennie Otto, carded a 69 at the Home of Golf.

Otto struggled at Kingsbarns, the third venue used at this multi-course pro-am, shooting a 74 and dropping down into a share of 17th.

Record

Scottish former Open champion Paul Lawrie - winner of this event in 2001 - came home in 31 to equal the course record at Carnoustie with a 64 and move into a share of third place.

He is alongside Irish Open champion Padraig Harrington - a two-time former winner - and England’s Justin Rose and Steve Webster.

Rose - second on the Order of Merit behind Harrington - had an eagle at the second and holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the last on his way to a 66 at Kingsbarns. Webster was also at Kingsbarns today and carded a 68.

Harrington missed an eight-foot birdie putt on the last at Kingsbarns on his way to a 67.

The other man in contention for the Merit title is Ernie Els and the South African kept himself in contention with a 70 at Kingsbarns to finish on 12-under.

Cristiano Ronaldo

LONDON (AP) - Manchester United finally found its goalscoring touch Saturday with a 4-0 win over Wigan that lifted it top of the Premier League for the first time this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo got two goals and Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez also scored to give United 20 points - one more than Arsenal, which hosts Sunderland on Sunday.

Aston Villa beat West Ham 1-0 in Saturday’s other Premier League match.

United scored all its goals after the interval.

"The second-half performance was absolutely superb. We speeded the game up, and the flow was much better," Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said. "There was excellent interplay between the strikers, and it seems to be coming together."

It was the first time this season that United has scored more than two goals in any competition. United’s 1-0 victory Tuesday over AS Roma in the Champions League was its sixth single-goal victory in eight matches this season.

Ronaldo scored in the 60th and 76th minutes. Ryan Giggs sent the ball into the box and, after Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland pushed away his deflected shot, Ronaldo headed in at close range for his first goal.

Rooney crossed for Ronaldo to score his second goal and added the third for United with a 82nd-minute header.

Tevez had put United in the lead in the 54th, evading two Wigan defenders and dribbling around the approaching Kirkland to score.

On Sunday, it’s: Arsenal versus Sunderland; Reading versus Derby; Liverpool versus Tottenham; Bolton versus Chelsea; Newcastle versus Everton; Manchester City versus Middlesbrough; Blackburn versus Birmingham; and Fulham versus Portsmouth.

It was a bad day for United injury-wise, with defenders Nemanja Vidic and John O’Shea taken off in the first half, and striker Louis Saha hurt in the warmup.

"Considering all the things that happened I think we’ve done fantastically well," Ferguson said. "Vidic has been taken to hospital with concussion, O’Shea has a dead (bruised) leg and Louis felt his knee in the warm-up. You can’t risk that."

Vidic hurt his head in an aerial collision with Wigan defender Marcus Bent in the second minute and needed treatment.

Fifteen minutes later, Vidic was again looked at by medical staff on the side of the field and talked at length with Ferguson. He was taken off in the 21st minute for Anderson, forcing a reshuffle of the United defence.

It didn’t last long. O’Shea, who had moved back to central defence to allow Anderson to play in midfield, came off in the 30th minute with a leg injury. He was replaced by fullback Daniel Simpson for his second United appearance.

Injuries had already prompted Ferguson to give Gerard Pique his second Premier League start at right back. And after Saha was hurt during the warmup, midfielder Chris Eagles replaced him on the bench.

"We had 10 players missing in the end but great credit to all the players who played today," Ferguson said.

Villa took the lead after 24 minutes, when Craig Gardner scored from a free kick, which was earned when Gabriel Agbonlahor was brought down just outside West Ham’s box by Danny Gabbidon.

It was Villa’s fourth successive home win and gave it 14 points from eight games. West Ham has 10 points, also from eight games.

Scotland

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Hibernian went top of the Scottish Premier League on Saturday with a 1-0 win at Rangers.

Hibernian scored with a header from David Murphy in the 61st minute for the win, which came two weeks after the Edinburgh-based side defeated the other Old Firm team, Celtic, 3-2 on Sept. 23.

Hibs is the only undefeated team in the Scottish Premier League and has 21 points, followed by Celtic and Rangers with 19. Celtic plays at Gretna on Sunday.

The match came four days after Rangers won 3-0 at French club Lyon in the Champions League for its second consecutive win in Europe.

Also Saturday, Darren Dods scored in the 78th minute in Dundee United’s 1-0 win over Motherwell; Hearts beat Falkirk 4-2 with goals from Audrius Ksanavicius, Marius Zaliukas, Andrius Velicka and Christian Nade; and Inverness Caledonian Thistle twice rallied to salvage a 2-2 draw at Kilmarnock.

Someone once said that scuba diving is like going back to Mother Nature’s womb albeit temporarily because every scuba diver would like to rise above deep waters no matter how cool the scene down there may be.

Scuba diving is a complicated sport that requires training and endurance. Scuba diving is not for the faint of heart, or for those who would shrink at the though of being submerged in water for a long time. This is not to say that scuba diving chooses its players because almost everyone can be a scuba diver, provided they do not have the age and health limitations.

Children as young as fifteen years old and in good health can train on scuba diving to prepare themselves for certification. However, all those interested to undergo training should fill up a health questionnaire and undergo medical checkups to determine their physical conditions.

While scuba divers have more opportunity to admire the fishery resources of the world, divers also dive for other reasons such as for scientific, commercial, military or recreational purposes.

Divers cannot go scuba diving without a certification even if they are doing it for fun. Majority of scuba divers do so for recreational purposes but they still have to undergo certification. Recreational divers can choose from a variety of specialization like underwater photography, search and rescue diving or night diving. Once they become experts in diving they can turn it into a career and become dive masters or underwater photographers.

There are however divers who dive for commercial purposes like for the purpose of salvaging sunken ships, constructing bridges and dams or to build underwater structures. Scientific divers focus on diving for the purpose of research.

A scuba diver must necessarily be a good swimmer who can float on water and swim fairly long distances. Basic swimming skills plus good health will make you eligible for certification as a diver.

A diver must tale note of his safety all of the time not only by getting proper training but also by making use of basic scuba diving gears like masks, fins and snorkels. A beginner can just rent the basic diving gear but if you intend to make this sport a long-term commitment then it would be best to buy the equipment. These three basic diving gear are every affordable and can be bought anywhere.

However, there is other diving gear that are more expensive like wet or dry suits, regulators or buoyancy compensators and scuba diving tanks. To make the most of your scuba diving gear, make sure to rinse them with fresh or tap water after using them. Allow them to dry but not in direct sunlight since they are made of rubber and can easily break down and deteriorate.

The basic diving gear is the same for most divers but specialty divers may have use for more sophisticated gadgets and equipment. But whatever kind of diving you do, always make sure to use the safety gears to protect yourself from the dangers of diving.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU standout defensive end Tommy Blake said he had to get away from football after he became overwhelmed with stress.

Blake will miss his second straight game, and third this season, when the Horned Frogs play Saturday at Wyoming. His status is expected to be re-evaluated next week.

“I feel like I was putting too much pressure on football, and I wasn’t taking care of myself as good as I should have been,” Blake told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in his first interview in two months. “I had to pay attention to Tommy. Not the football player. Just Tommy.”

Blake, on medical level for undisclosed reasons for the second time this season, didn’t openly discuss or disclose what has kept him off the field. He did, however, scoff at the idea that his absence was because of steroid use, drug abuse or plans to leave football for life in the ministry.

“People make up things,” Blake said in the story published Friday. “Things that they say, they really don’t know because they don’t know me. I have never spoken to anybody. It’s all just speculation.”

Blake, a two-time All-Mountain West Conference pick who went into the season as a top NFL prospect, initially left the team during preseason practice and went home to Aransas Pass, about 370 miles from Fort Worth on the Texas Gulf Coast.

He returned the next week and was held out of the season opener. He played three games before taking another leave.

Blake said he has spent the past two weeks organizing his life. He said his 12-hour class load is in order, and he will need only nine hours after this semester to complete a degree in communications. He has also been working out, often late at night in TCU’s weight room.

“I’m getting a lot of stress off my chest, just releasing the little things I’ve kept inside for a while,” Blake said. “I’m always thinking about somebody else. It’s always been like that. Now, I’ve just got to take care of me a bit.”

Former United States Olympian Mickey Bey Jr. (9-0, 6 KOs) scored two knockdowns en route to hammering out a second-round knockout over outclassed Castulo Gonzalez (9-4, 3 KOs).

Bey, fighting out of Cleveland, Ohio, began teeing off on his opponent in the opening round of a fight scheduled for eight rounds. Jolting left hooks continued to penetrate Gonzalez’s lackluster defense, as Bey bounced several head snapping left hooks off of his opponent’s skull. Late in the 1st, Bey drew a caution from referee Jose Cobain to get his punches up.

With 2:35 to go in the 2nd, Bey clocked Gonzalez, Lynn, Massachusetts, via Puerto San Jose, Guatemala with a crushing left hook to the jaw that dropped the boxer flat on his back. Gonzalez rolled off the deck and was back on his feet at the count of four. Bey continued to land riveting punches but with 2:04 to go in the 4th, he floored Gonzalez with yet another devastating left hook and he fell back into the ropes. Gonzalez managed to make it to his feet at the count of three but in retrospect it wasn’t the wisest move.

Bey returned to hammering away at his fading opponent and then with 1:21 to go in the round, he scored with two more punishing shots that richochtted off of Gonzalez’s jaw and the referee finally halted the one-sided encounter. Mickey Bey had registered a TKO victory at 1:41 of the second round.

Ron Zook is silencing his critics one win at a time.

Illinois coach Ron Zook sees something else.

At least he sees something else this week upon learning his Illini are 2½-point favorites Saturday against visiting Wisconsin.

To Zook, the brilliance that’s raised a gambling mecca atop sand and tumbleweeds is as transparent as freshly-scrubbed window pane.

“That favorite stuff,” Zook sniffed. “That’s got to be a Wisconsin guy trying to get them upset. I don’t know how you can have a team [favored] that’s been 2-10 the last two years playing the No. 5 team in the nation.”

Forget the 4-1 start overall, which is as many wins as Illinois managed his first two seasons.

Forget the 2-0 start in Big Ten play, which is double the Illini’s conference win total in 2005 and 2006 combined.

And forget the 27-20 upset last week of No. 21 Penn State, which ended Illinois’ 17-game losing streak against ranked opponents.

The truest measure of the Illini’s rebirth is that those whose wealth depends on never being wrong about these things favor the target of FireRonZook.com over a team ranked fifth in the country and boasting the nation’s longest winning streak.

All this leaves the over-caffeinated Zook so conflicted he might need therapy.

In the midst of stifling the slightest hint of satisfaction, he can’t help acknowledging the unmistakable advancement of his program in just over two years.

“I don’t want to say we’ve turned it around,” Zook said. “We haven’t turned it around. But we’ve made some progress.”

Just how much became evident Saturday after a third interception sealed Illinois’ first win over a ranked opponent at home since 1991.

While his players exulted, Zook scanned a sold-out Memorial Stadium that just two years ago had 16,000 empty seats when Penn State came to town and applied a 63-10 beating.

Senior linebacker J Leman was a sophomore then, playing for a head coach who didn’t recruit him, but in whom he believed amid a tomb-like locker room afterward.

Big Ten notebook From Michigan’s injury woes to the big matchup between Purdue-Ohio State, the Big Ten is covered here. Notebook

“Coach Zook told us that day, ‘This is as low as we’ve ever been,’ Leman recalled. “He said, ‘From now on, we can do nothing but go up.’ It’s so true, because since that day, we’ve come a long, long way.”

The journey can gain momentum Saturday against Wisconsin, a rugged outfit that trailed Illinois 24-10 at the half in Madison last season before scoring 20 unanswered in the second half.

That loss came amid seven straight defeats on the heels of what seemed a corner-turning, 23-20 comeback victory at Michigan State.

Turns out, Illinois wasn’t ready to handle prosperity, and so it suffered more, winding up 2-10 overall and 1-7 in the league after going 2-9 and 0-8 in Zook’s first season of 2005.

Back then, FireRonZook.com was still doing a brisk business, still getting laughs at Zook’s expense from University of Florida fans who never warmed to the man tapped to succeed Steve Spurrier.

Zook smiles now at the mention of the Web site, which went public before he coached his first game. But he turns serious when asked if his Internet tormentors, or any of the rocky times in Gainesville, Fla. made him wonder whether his coaching talents were limited to being a great assistant.

“Never,” he said. “Did I evaluate? Absolutely. Did I question myself at what I was doing? Absolutely. But never did I doubt.”

That faith was rooted in a work ethic that’s long made Zook the caricature next to the term, “tireless recruiter.”

After Ron Turner’s firing at Illinois, Zook took over and tirelessly sold his plan not just to high school prospects, but to the holdovers he inherited.

“He won us over with his vision and his energy,” said Leman, a minister’s son who plays with a passion that’s made him the Big Ten’s leading tackler both last year and this year. “He gave us a choice: Either hop on or hop off, and everyone hopped on. That’s why this team is a hybrid. We have a mix of feisty old veterans and great young talent. We’ve been able to mesh that together.”

Zook has indeed turned Illinois into a recruiting factor in areas where it previously struggled.

He lured cornerback Vontae Davis from Washington D.C. and quarterback Juice Williams from Chicago last season and wide receiver Arrelious (Rejus) Benn from D.C. and defensive end Martez Wilson from Chicago this year.

Mark Cowan/Icon SMI

J Leman and his fellow upperclassmen bought into Ron Zook’s philosophy.

Everybody who’s anybody wanted all four, but Zook sold them on building something special at Illinois on a foundation already laid by Leman and guys like junior tailback Rashard Mendenhall.

Mendenhall had only two 100-yard rushing performances his first two seasons and was known as a fumbler, so no one knew whether Illinois could match its success on the ground in 2006 when it led the league in rushing.

Through five games, Mendenhall ranks third in the league in rushing at 122.4 yards per-game, and with eight rushing touchdowns he trails only Wisconsin’s P.J. Hill, with nine.

Illinois, once again, owns the league’s best rushing offense.

Leman is the corresponding rock on defense, making a highlight-reel strip of a touchdown pass from Penn State’s right end on Saturday, and then intercepting on the next play to turn back a go-ahead scoring threat.

Benn showed why Notre Dame worked itself into a snit over losing him to Illinois, returning a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and steamrolling through most of the Penn State secondary with a 29-yard touchdown catch and run.

Zook has told anyone who will listen that Benn will be better than any of the Florida wide receivers who riddled Ohio State in the BCS National Championship game in January.

After Saturday, there are no leftover skeptics who’d quarrel with that opinion.

“You need athletes to win, and guys like Juice, Rejus and Vontae give us that,” Leman said. “They sure are fun to watch. They add a little flair that was needed to get us over the hump.”

More hurdles remain after Wisconsin, but a win this week would give Illinois back-to-back victories over ranked opponents on consecutive weeks for the first time in school history.

Another win beyond that would clinch a bowl bid, the Illini’s first since winning the Big Ten championship in 2001.

“There’s still a lot of rough water out there,” Zook said. “We better keep those hatches battened up. We still have a long way to go.”

But not as far as they’ve already gone.

Bruce Hooley has covered the Big Ten for more than two decades and now is host of a daily talk show on WBNS-AM 1460 in Columbus, Ohio.

TOKYO — France’s Virginie Razzano rallied from a set down Saturday to defeat top-seeded Venus Williams 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 in the final of the Japan Open.

Venus Williams had three match points on Virginie Razzano in the second set tiebreak, but couldn’t close the deal on what would have been her fourth title of the season.

In the men’s bracket, top-seeded David Ferrer of Spain downed seventh-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 7-6 (3), 6-3 and will face third-seeded Richard Gasquet of France in Sunday’s final. Gasquet defeated second-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 7-6(3), 6-3.

Williams had three match points in the tiebreak of the second set but couldn’t finish off the fifth-seeded Razzano, who won her second straight WTA tournament.

“I’m very happy to win,” said Razzano, who won the Guangzhou International Open on Sunday for her first WTA Tour singles title. “Venus is a great champion, she’s not in the top 10 by magic.”

Williams, No. 8 in the WTA rankings, was down 5-2 in the second set but fought back to tie and then broke Razzano to take a 6-5 lead.

Razzano broke Williams to force a tiebreak and then came back from being down 6-3 to win the tiebreaker 9-7.

Williams won the first game of the third set but took a 10-minute injury timeout and came back with her right thigh wrapped.

“It started to hurt in the first set,” said Williams. “I wanted to play because I wanted to win, then in the third set I couldn’t get my leg up on my serve so I had to get it taped.”

Both players struggled with their serves in the final set. Williams broke Razzano to tie the set 4-4 and Razzano broke Williams to take a 5-4 lead.

Razzano held serve in the final game and won the match when Williams’ return went into the net.

“I wasn’t tired,” said Williams, who won the Korea Open on Sunday. “She managed to play good at the right moments so congratulations to her, she’s had a great year.”

Razzano, who came into the match 33rd in the WTA rankings, said she was fatigued by the end of the match, which lasted 2 hours, 48 minutes.

“I’m very tired,” said Razzano. “I’ve played a lot of tennis in the past week and this was a difficult match.”
