Blues have Ten Cate ‘agreement’

Ten Cate: Chelsea talks

Henk Ten Cate has an ‘agreement’ with Chelsea to become Avram Grant’s new assistant, according to the Ajax manager’s agent.

Ten Cate is understood to have held discussions with Chelsea’s technical director Frank Arnesen, and the Premier League club have stated they are considering the option of teaming current number two Steve Clarke with a foreign coach.

Agent Sigi Lens has now revealed that the Dutchman is interested in taking a role at Stamford Bridge.

“It’s true, we have an agreement with Chelsea,” Lens told The Sun.

“It’s an opportunity for him, a challenge for him to work with a big team and work with Avram Grant to build a new team.

“Chelsea have spoken to Henk about the matter. There was a conversation and both the manager (Grant) and Henk are on the same wavelength.

“They invited Henk to a meeting to talk about technical matters and ask how he sees things and how he wants to play and that was good.”

Good credentials

Lens feels Ten Cate would be the ideal man to help take Chelsea forward, after a successful stint at the Amsterdam ArenA.

“You can see how he plays the game tactically,” said the Dutchman’s representative.

“Look at Ajax last year. The season before they finished fifth and with Henk they were joint top and only just lost out on the title by one goal.”

Chelsea denied on Thursday that they had agreed a deal to appoint Guus Hiddink as manager, amid continuing speculation about Grant’s future.

However, some reports in the English press suggest that Ten Cate, far from being keen on job within Grant’s coaching team, would only want to come to Chelsea if Hiddink was in the hotseat.
