Grant: Terry is full of heart

Terry: Soldiered on

Chelsea manager Avram Grant has labelled John Terry ‘very special’ following the defender’s full 90 minutes against Valencia.

The Blues captain suffered a depressed fracture of the cheekbone in Saturday’s clash against Fulham, and then underwent surgery just a day later.

Terry, though, was determined to play at the Mestalla and wore a protective mask for the impressive 2-1 UEFA Champions League victory.

Big heart

Grant hailed the centre-back’s courage and believes there are few players in the world that would have demonstrated such typical Terry intrepidness.

“When you see John Terry you see a player who plays with all his heart, I don’t know how many players can play with this injury but John Terry’s very special,” he said.

“He’s a player with a big heart and I think that big players need to be an example to the other, and you cannot ask for a better example than this.”

Punished

Meanwhile, Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores has admitted that his side were punished for making costly errors against a world class team.

“At the end of the day the small details are important, and we made two great errors. We have some good feelings after the game but it is a bad result and that is what really counts,” he said.

“The thing that big teams have is that they can win by doing very little. We have done it sometimes, but this time it has been done to us. It has been Chelsea who have managed to do this.”
