The sale of racing’s only trade daily paper, the Racing Post, to an Irish investment firm, will have at least one direct benefit for the industry it services. Part of the £170m deal is that £10m will go to four charities – Injured Jockeys’ Fund, Retraining of Racehorses, Racing Welfare and Direct Aid for Africa. Vendors Trinity Mirror agreed to do this at the suggestion of Sheikh Mohammed, who founded the Racing Post in 1986.

The Bucknell women’s soccer team will begin its quest towards another Patriot League title as the 2006 regular season co-champion Bison will take on the league’s defending tournament champion, Navy on Friday, Oct. 5, on Varsity Soccer Field at 7 p.m. After dropping its last two games to Marist and Loyola (Md.), Bucknell is 4-6-0 on the season, while the Mids enter Friday’s contest with a record of 6-3-2.

A comedian attended Ireland’s homecoming press conference yesterday and asked, in a duly exaggerated French accent, whether the World Cup expellees’ head coach, Eddie O’Sullivan, was now a “croque monsieur”. The coach’s subsequent defiance, perhaps as forced as the grin extracted by Risteard Cooper’s slightly less than Wildean remark, at least had a solid foundation. The coach is not going to jump and the Irish Rugby Football Union is unlikely to give him a push – not after sending him off to France in the first place with a brand, spanking new contract, anyway.

“We need to capitalise on the two games coming up.” That was the message from Stuart Pearce as he named his Under-21 squad to take on Montenegro and Republic of Ireland later this month.

England have so far collected six points from their two opening games, both away from home, and scored five without reply in the process. However, Pearce knows that there is a lot of hard work still ahead as they lie in second spot in Group 3.
