Welterweight “Viscous” Victor Ortiz (19-1-1, 14 KO’s) dominated the veteran from Accra, Ghana Emmanuel “Sleek” Clottey (24-8, 14 KO’s) from the opening stanza before eventually scoring a tenth round TKO victory. A counterpuncher by trade, Clottey (145) simply didn’t let his hand go enough against the 20-year-old southpaw Ortiz (143), who repeatedly won a number of the exchanges in the early going. In the 6th, Ortiz, Oxnard, California rocked Clottey several times with hammering right hooks and molar rattling left crosses to the head.

Referee Ronnie Ralston took a point away from Clottey, 33, early in 8th, after making a poor judgement call when the fighters became entangled and Ortiz slipped to the floor. With 50-seconds remaining in the round, Ortiz hit the deck again following a judo move from the African and the referee Ralston deducted the second point from Clottey’s scorecard, which by any stretch of the imagination was in the minus numbers category.

The veteran Clottey was seemingly attempting to just go the distance when with 34-seconds to go in the 10th, Ortiz dropped his opponent with a sharp right hook to the head. Clottey’s legs gave way as he fell to the floor but he managed to stagger to his feet at the count of two. As soon as the action resumed, Ortiz unloaded a wicked volley of straight left crosses to the chin and blistering right hooks off the side of the African’s skull. With Clottey careening along the ropes and out on his feet, Ortiz scored with a final three-shot combination including a sizzling left hand to the chin and the native of Ghana hit the floor for the final time. The referee Ralston immediately waved off the bout and awarded Ortiz a TKO victory at 2:59 of the 10th and final round.
